Is premerieng movie on DTH a good idea?
In last few weeks there has been lot of debate on Kamal Hasan's decision to premier his movie Vishwaroopam on DTH before its theatrical release. This has been a first of sorts and has not happened abroad too.No wonder this kind of initiative has come from Kamal Hasan who has been always a visionary and someone ahead of his time. This decision was bound to get a thumbs down from Distributors and Exhibitors and rightly so.
But for producers and audiences its a win win situatuion. For producers its definately a robust source of revenue in several ways:
Firstly,it would get them a larger auedience as in say in 1000 bucks a family of 4-5 or even more can watch a movie instead of seperately paying for the tickets and the snacks would also be cheaper:-).So people who may not have otherwise gone to multiplex to watch a movie would watch it
Secondly, there are many small towns where there are no good theatres, although some affluent and upper middle class families have purchasing power for watching a movie at a multiplex there but have to wait for the movie to come on DTH(at a cheaper cost) or satellite, these segment of audiences can also be tapped by this mode.
Thirdly,in case of a regional movie it makes more sense since there are many migrants all over India. For ex-South Indians settled in North India may not get to see the southern language movie in theatres as South Movies seldom get a release there and even if they do the number of shows are very less, such a group of audience can also be tapped through this mode
Fourthly,it can curb piracy to a large extent. There some families who prefer to watch movies at home although they can afford to watch movie at multiplexes but if they want to watch the movie in the release week itself they have no option but to buy pirated version, but with the release of movies on DTH in the release week itself people would no longer buy pirated DVDs
Lastly, there are chances if people like a movie on DTH they may go to see it in theaters thus benefiting the producers both ways. This would be more in the case of movies with special effects or larger than life movies
But for exhibitors and distributors its definitely not a good news especially the multiplexes.Single screen theatres would not get affected much since most of their target audience will not be able to afford to see the mvoie on DTH by paying so much money but multiplexes will definitely get affected or at least it looks so if this trend gets popular and other producers try this too.
Also in case of southern movies like Vishwaroopam distributors-exhibit will not lose much since people there are more fond of watching movies on big screen over television.Vishwaroopam's box office collection would ultimately will decide if this trend is here to stay...
