3 under – rated movies of Sanjay Dutt

1. Kabzaa

The team of Naam – Mahesh Bhatt, Salim Khan and Sanjay Dutt teamed for Mukesh Bhatt’s1st home production The film stands out to due to its engaging screenplay and the performances of the actors- Sanjay Dutt, Raj Babbar,Paresh Rawal and Alok Nath. There are many stand out scenes like the opening credits, the confontation scene between Dutt and Alok Nath, Dutt and Babbar when Dutt confronts him on working with a gangster. The whole transformation of Sanjay Dutt from a good for nothing guy to the one who is willing to risk his life for a social cause was handled beautifully. The film was again remade as Ghulam which was a bigger commercial success than the predecessor although Dutt’s performance would be rated better than Aamir.

2. Kurukshetra

Mahesh Manjrekar is one of the few directors who always extracts great performance from Sanjay Dutt . Dutt delivers one of his best performances as a no-nonsense and brave cop in this done to death good versus bad story The story is the usual an honest versus the bad system story but what separates is the treatment and the performance There are many standout scene – when Dutt hears the story Of the rape victim, Mukesh Rishi and Dutt’s first encounter, Confrontation between Om Puri and Dutt, Sayaji Shinde’s Poignant speech on lives of the under-paid cops. The movie is steeped in cliches but the screenplay, treatment and the absence of any forced sub plots like comedy and romance help in adding tension to the drama. Dutt’s character is very well sketched and shows both his touch and vulnerable side. Om Puri is brilliant as the bad cop and Mukesh Rishi playing a good hearted baddy is also very good. Mahima Chowdhary has a small role but portrays the character of a long suffering wife due to her hubby’s honesty very well.

3. Zinda

This would easily rank as Sanjay Dutt’s most under- rated performance. A performance which deserves a standing ovation unfortunately went largely unnoticed. Dutt portrays the vulnerability and helpless like no other. The man who has been imprisoned for  14 years without knowing the reason for the same and his sudden release and his quest to find who imprisoned and why. The scenes where Dutt tries to toughen himself, his expression after his release seeing the sunlight after so many years, the scene where he bashes up 50 guys and fully wounded, when he gets to know that he has a daughter shows Dutt’s class as an actor Although it is a 2 hero film and John Abraham also acted well, it is a Sanjay Dutt film all the way. Catch it up if you have not seen it yet!
