Why did Indipop die
In the early 90s, Indipop came as a breath of fresh air and was poised to co-exist with the Bollywood and gave listeners a lot of genre of songs to chose from.
Singers like Biddu, Alisha Chinai, Daler Mehndi, Mohit Chauhan, Shweta Shetty, Sunita Rao and bands like Euphoria, Aryans, Stereo Nation made some beautiful music and sold like hot cakes. The era had some amazingly good music videos. One thing which worked also worked in favour of Indipop was that it coincided with launch of satellite channels in India. Music channels like MTV, Channel V and others contributed hugely to the rise of Indipop.
For a decade they co-existed with Bollywood music beautifully and in fact all the top playback singers of that time -Kumar Sanu, Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik, Abhijeet, Sonu Nigam, Hariharan and legendary Asha Bhonsle also explored the genre and came up with their music albums and it seemed that Indipop is here to stay.
However, unfortunately Indipop couldnt' stay for very long and there are quite a few reasons for the same:
-Firstly, the music companies who made Indipop a success became one of the most prominent reason for its downfall. Music companies buoyed by the success started a lot of new singers and most of them were very mediocre artists. The quantity started taking over the quality and started the downfall of Indipop
-Bollywood also killed Indipop in more than one ways. Firstly, they started pressurizing the music channels to play their songs and because of the revenue pressure the music channels gave in and secondly quite a few of the Indipop started shifted to film music
-Piracy though as a problem affected the whole music industry and not only the Indipop but it suffered more because Bollywood was still able to make up for losses because film music was a part of the overall package and loss of revenue in terms of music could be made up by box office collections
However, with the exponential rise of Youtube and other music streaming platforms we can hope that independent music may get a boost and we may get to hear some great independent music again.
